Video footage captured the aftermath of a shooting by Los Angeles police, resulting in the death of a dog dressed in a New York Knicks jersey. The incident occurred as officers responded to reports of a woman screaming, which turned out to be a celebration of the Knicks’ NBA championship victory.
Following the Knicks’ triumph in the NBA Finals on Saturday, the Los Angeles Police Department reported in a news release that they had shot and killed the dog while attending to an unrelated situation. The department had been responding to a call concerning a “screaming woman” in Canoga Park, a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley.
Upon reaching the designated apartment, officers were met by a resident who opened the door. The LAPD described a “large dog” barking at officers nearby. The officers requested the resident to secure the dog, and she briefly closed the door. When reopened, the dog exited the apartment and charged at one of the officers, leading to an Officer-Involved Shooting (OIS).
The Los Angeles Department of Animal Services was alerted, and they took custody of the deceased dog. The dog’s owner cooperated with the investigation. The dog’s name was Jameson, according to the owner’s girlfriend who spoke with NBC News.
A TikTok video, viewed over 15 million times, shows a woman distraught over the deceased dog clad in a blue and orange t-shirt. “The Knicks just won the championship,” she cries. “We were just so happy. We just celebrating the Knicks.”
Several officers were seen standing around the grieving woman. An observer off-camera criticized the police for their actions, pointing out larger crimes happening in the area.
The LAPD confirmed to NBC Los Angeles that the woman had been shouting out of joy for the Knicks’ victory. They won against the San Antonio Spurs in Game 5, earning New York its first NBA championship in more than five decades.
