LAUSD Superintendent Carvalho Resigns Amid FBI Investigation

Alberto Carvalho, recently acclaimed for his leadership at the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD), resigned following an FBI investigation linked to a controversial AI chatbot project. This event marks a sudden end to his otherwise impactful tenure.

Carvalho’s Tenure at LAUSD

Carvalho began his role in February 2022, amid significant challenges like declining student performance and absenteeism due to the pandemic. Under his leadership, the district made notable improvements, earning praise from Governor Gavin Newsom for outperforming statewide academic progress.

Despite natural disasters and political challenges, Carvalho led LAUSD to exceed pre-pandemic performance levels across various student groups, including low-income, disabled, and minority students.

FBI Investigation and Resignation

In February, federal agents raided Carvalho’s home and office, a move linked to his interactions with an educational contractor involved in an AI chatbot project. Although not charged, Carvalho resigned to enable the school district to maintain focus on education without distractions.

AI Chatbot Controversy

The AI project, called “Ed,” was introduced by Carvalho in March 2024. It failed quickly, leading to the company’s collapse after fraud charges against its founder. The financial fallout from the project was approximately $3 million.

Andrew Chait Takes Interim Role

Andres Chait, a veteran administrator, stepped in as interim superintendent. He took charge following Carvalho’s leave, navigating the district through its challenges, such as averting a significant strike involving three unions.

Looking Forward

The Board of Education is focused on finding a permanent replacement for Carvalho while ensuring continuity and stability. LAUSD continues to face budget concerns and strives to maintain momentum in student progress despite leadership changes.

Further Developments

The LA Times article referenced ongoing news and political updates, noting health and economic impacts from fires, potential tax changes, and other significant regional occurrences. These developments underline the dynamic and multifaceted nature of issues impacting LAUSD and its broader context.
