The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool recently underwent a renovation that has created noticeable changes. Initially, the pool was lined with a protective coating praised by former President Donald Trump as ‘American flag blue.’ However, observations from the Washington Monument show the liner appears grayer since its initial application in early June.
Work crews have removed debris from the pool’s surface after it was drained. Trump’s goal was to complete the revamping by July 4 for the nation’s 250th birthday, a plan that missed its target. Originally estimated at $1.5 million, the project’s costs expanded to over $16 million by June.
Trump promised lasting repairs, stating they would last for a century. Still, following the project’s completion, algae blooms and the peeling of the pool’s new coating were reported. Green Water Solutions was contracted at $1.7 million to set up a water-purification system, while Atlantic Industrial Coatings received $14.7 million to repaint and waterproof the pool’s concrete base.
While the president blamed vandals for the peeling, critics suggest the issues stem from faulty repair work. Without evidence, Trump claimed a ‘350-foot gash’ made by vandals damaged the liner. Observations from the Washington Monument did not confirm large slash marks.
Interior Secretary Doug Burgum outlined the plan to repair the alleged vandalism and refill the pool after cleaning the debris from Independence Day fireworks. He shared these details on conservative podcaster Katie Miller’s platform.
On June 9, a sharp object allegedly cut the pool’s liner, reported by the National Park Service to the U.S. Park Police. Former Olympic canoe racer David Hearn was charged with deliberately damaging the Reflecting Pool. He pleaded not guilty, asserting he dropped a peeled piece of sealant upon instructions from a park worker.
His defense and critics argue the charges against him result from poor renovation efforts. Three other individuals faced misdemeanor charges for removing paint chips, pleading not guilty.
These renovations are part of various projects Trump initiated throughout Washington, including the demolition of the White House’s East Wing for a $400 million ballroom. Plans also include a large arch between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.
