The contractor responsible for the renovations at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has attributed the peeling of the pool’s new blue liner to internal errors and a flawed repair plan. This statement from Atlantic Industrial Coatings contrasts with President Trump’s previous claims that vandals were to blame for the damage.
Documents reviewed by The New York Times revealed that the company identified mistakes in both the design and implementation phases of the project. These reports were submitted to the government and included feedback from the National Park Service.
Error Details
According to Atlantic’s report dated August 14, 2026, and further elaborated on September 2, errors occurred due to ‘human oversight.’ Workers applied insufficient primer in several areas, leading to poor adhesion between liner layers. Furthermore, the repair plan specified two chemicals that were incompatible, compounding the issue.
Legal Actions
The Justice Department initially charged several individuals with vandalism in early July. However, the charges began to be dismissed by July 31 after new evidence surfaced. President Trump had cited vandalism, pointing to individuals using knives or box cutters, but these government documents contradict those claims.
Workers were observed on Thursday applying a blue coating as part of the ongoing repair efforts at the site. This process aims to address the identified issues and restore the pool to its intended state.
