Debbie Hubbs, 73, from Arizona, co-created the Low Carb Cruise. Her personal experience with low-carb eating sparked her weight loss journey. Hubbs found this diet to be the only method that consistently made her feel healthy. “For the last 40, 50 years, that’s what’s made me feel healthy and strong,” Hubbs stated. She continues her active lifestyle, including scuba diving, even at 73.

The cruise began after Hubbs met a fellow dieter in an online weight-loss forum in 2008. They shared a love for cruises and decided to expand their online community to join them on a cruise adventure. Initially, about 30 attendees participated in the first Low Carb Cruise. In recent events, attendance grew to over 360 passengers traveling to destinations like Alaska.

Participants enjoy dining together and engage in a variety of group activities. The Low Carb Cruise emphasizes reducing carbohydrate intake through seminars without focusing on a singular low-carb plan. Recently, sailings have taken place on Royal Caribbean ships, known for their spacious conference facilities.

The most recent cruise featured talks from health professionals covering topics like diet and cancer, metabolic and heart health, and overcoming food addiction. Attendees come from all over the world, including Iceland, South Africa, and Europe.

Community Impact and Personal Successes

Michelle Hall, a committee member, shared her own lifelong struggle with weight and how the keto diet, tried in June 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, finally worked for her. Hall notes the strong sense of community as a key attraction for attendees, some of whom have transformative experiences on the cruise.

“Since my first Low Carb Cruise, the experience has been transformative,” one participant said, highlighting personal achievements like completing a 5K run.
