LSU Faces Controversy Over Former Pros Returning to College Team

The LSU Tigers are gearing up for their season opener against the Clemson Tigers. Yet, the spotlight is not solely on the upcoming game at Death Valley. The college football community is curious about the availability of players like tight end Dae’Quan Wright and former Notre Dame defensive end Junior Tuihalamaka. Their return to the NCAA, after involvement with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns, has sparked discussion.

While Week 0 of college football has concluded, the debate on former NFL rookies seeking a fifth year of college eligibility continues. The SEC and major conferences have debated new eligibility guidelines, which have led to legal battles and a strain on relationships among the NCAA, conferences, and schools.

Ben McDonald, a gold medalist and former LSU pitcher, commented on the situation, “Once you play your four years, it’s time to move on. But with NIL money, there’s a desire to return for a fifth year and earn,”

Drew Rosenhaus, a top NFL agent representing Wright, supports the NCAA’s “5-for-5” rule. This rule allows five years of eligibility over five seasons. He argues that financial benefits in college often surpass practice squad earnings. Wright’s experience with NFL pros adds value to his return, making him more prepared for future NFL opportunities.

Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule agrees, acknowledging the boost players get from past NFL training camps. He notes that players with such experience are “twice as good” once they return. This perspective aligns with college coaches like Lane Kiffin, who see value in adding experienced players to enhance team competitiveness.

On the other side, McDonald expresses concern about its impact on incoming freshmen. These younger players may face limited opportunities due to the 5-for-5 arrangement.

Kiffin shared insights from discussions with his leadership committee. He remarked, “We understand team dynamics, but bringing experienced players aligns with how the real world works.” A decision on these players will be made soon, as SEC’s final roster submission deadline approaches.

Not all agree with this approach. Texas coach Steve Sarkisian criticizes the move to include former NFL players, which might push out existing team members. He questions the morality of such decisions, emphasizing the disruption it causes for those dedicated to the sport over time.
