Luigi Mangione has informed a federal court in Manhattan that he plans to plead guilty to charges related to stalking. The 28-year-old is facing a maximum life sentence for following UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson before Thompson’s murder in December 2024.
The accused, Mangione, entered his guilty plea, which had been anticipated, during a Friday morning court session. This action could open the door for his defense to potentially invoke double jeopardy arguments before his state murder trial.
Prosecutors allege Mangione, wearing a hood, approached Brian Thompson unnoticed on December 4, 2024, and shot him in the back near a Hilton hotel in Manhattan. Judge Margaret Garnett confirmed with Mangione that he understood a life sentence could result from his guilty plea. Mangione acknowledged this.
During the hearing, Mangione remained seated despite being given a chance to address the court. He elaborated on his motivations, indicating prior severe back pain and knowledge of UnitedHealthcare’s investor conference.
Prosecutors provided evidence that would have been presented at trial, such as surveillance footage. This footage reportedly shows Mangione’s bus arrival in New York, his tracking of Thompson at the Hilton, and the murder act. Images depict Thompson being shot from behind, collapsing, and Mangione fleeing on a bicycle.
Authorities discovered Mangione’s DNA and fingerprints at the crime scene and recovered the alleged murder weapon in his backpack. Cellphone data and an eyewitness also connect Mangione to the incident.
