Macklemore Removed from Ed Sheeran Tour Following Pro-Palestine Remarks

Macklemore, scheduled to perform on Ed Sheeran’s “Loop Tour” in the U.S., will no longer be part of the lineup after controversial remarks. The rapper consistently advocated to “Free Palestine” and performed his song “Hind’s Hall” with anti-Israel sentiments. His actions led to his removal from the tour’s remaining U.S. dates.

Tour Promoter’s Statement

Messina Touring Group, responsible for the U.S. leg of Sheeran’s tour, released a statement explaining that venues wouldn’t allow Macklemore’s inclusion. His presence would lead to potential cancellations impacting a large number of fans.

Macklemore’s Response

The rapper took to Instagram to express his perspective. He acknowledged Sheeran and his team’s decision to exclude him. Though addressing the issue, Macklemore stressed that neither he, Sheeran, nor Pink were victims due to their positions of privilege and access to resources.

The victims are the Palestinian people… forced to live through unimaginable violence.

His post emphasized the plight of Palestinians, noting the casualties and hardships faced in Gaza.

Performance Backlash

During his performance opening for Sheeran at MetLife Stadium, Macklemore’s “Free Palestine” chants against a backdrop slideshow caused upset among fans and groups like “Stop Antisemitism,” who labeled the performance as “awful.” Pink also encountered criticism after sharing a video critical of Macklemore, sparking further controversy.

Conversations with Sheeran

Macklemore described his discussions with Sheeran as difficult but rooted in mutual respect despite disagreement. He shared that Robert Kraft, owner of Gillette Stadium, and others pressured for Macklemore’s removal, asserting that Sheeran faced an ultimatum.

If Macklemore stays on the tour, you will not be allowed to play in our venues.

Macklemore expressed resentment over accusations of antisemitism being used as a shield against criticism of Israel.

Continued Advocacy

Macklemore emphasized that his advocacy for Palestine had persisted for years, questioning its highlighted significance now due to the tour’s high profile. Despite the fallout, he hopes the situation doesn’t damage his friendship with Sheeran.

The rapper stands by his convictions, viewing the platform as an opportunity to raise awareness.
