In his first national media interview, Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner addressed recent allegations against him. These claims surfaced following a report in the New York Times where several of his ex-girlfriends accused him of engaging in inappropriate behavior, including violent episodes and discussions about rape fantasies.
During an interview on MS NOW’s “All In with Chris Hayes,” Platner denied these accusations, stating, “There are some allegations in this piece that I just want to be kind of unequivocal about are simply not true.” He particularly refuted claims of physical violence towards a former girlfriend, asserting the allegations were politically motivated.
Platner acknowledged a troubled past characterized by heavy drinking and difficulties in personal relationships following his return from combat service. He admitted struggling with self-medication during that time but maintained the more serious allegations were false.
The report further scrutinized Platner’s past, revealing a controversial tattoo and offensive Reddit comments, including one where he questioned a wounded soldier’s will to live. He also faced criticism for sending explicit messages to multiple women while married.
Platner’s campaign criticized one of the witnesses, Lyndsey Fifield, calling her a “lifelong GOP operative.” In response to the controversies, Platner’s wife, Amy Gertner, publicly defended him, releasing a video in support of his campaign.
