A large-scale manhunt is underway in Virginia for a suspect regarded as ‘armed and extremely dangerous’ following an alleged ambush on two deputies during a welfare check on Friday night. The attack resulted in the death of Deputy Logan Utt, aged 31, and the injury of a fellow officer. Carroll County Sheriff Kevin Kemp confirmed the incident.
The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the suspect, Michael Puckett. Puckett is accused of shooting the two deputies, killing Utt in the process. According to the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 9:30 p.m. local time when deputies were sent to a residence at the request of a family member for a welfare check. Upon arrival, Puckett allegedly opened fire on the officers, resulting in Utt’s death and injuring the other officer. The second deputy’s ballistic vest was credited with saving his life.
After the deputies returned fire, Puckett managed to flee and is currently at large. Virginia State Police are actively searching for him. Authorities have warned the public to avoid approaching Puckett and to contact 911 if he is seen. Utt, who joined the force in 2023 and was a military veteran, is remembered for his commitment to making Carroll County safer.
‘Becoming a deputy sheriff was a lifelong dream, and he worked every day to make Carroll County a safer place,’ Sheriff Kemp stated. ‘Today, Carroll County has lost a hero, and a family has suffered an unimaginable loss.’ The injured deputy is reportedly in stable condition and recovering.
Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger is monitoring the situation closely. She has encouraged those with information about Puckett’s whereabouts to come forward. In her statement, she emphasized Deputy Utt’s dedication and bravery, stating, ‘Deputy Logan Utt’s sacrifice is a testament to his bravery and dedication to his community.’ She mentioned that her thoughts are with Utt’s family, the injured officer, and all law enforcement personnel.
The Virginia State Police is taking the lead on the investigation. This story is developing, and updates will be provided as new information becomes available.
