MapQuest has recently gained attention by refusing to adopt President Donald Trump’s executive decision to rename Lake Ontario as ‘Lake America’ on their maps. Despite updates from other platforms like Google Maps, MapQuest chose not to follow the same route. This decision came after Trump’s renaming initiative, part of the broader trade tensions between the U.S. and Canada.
The ownership of MapQuest, a pivotal factor here, resides with System1, a California-based company. System1’s CEO, Michael Blend, has made contributions to several Democratic campaigns, suggesting potential political influences. However, it’s unknown whether Blend was involved in the MapQuest decision.
In a significant move to engage users, MapQuest launched a new feature allowing users to rename Lake Ontario creatively. This interactive approach resonated with many, leading to a surge in app downloads and renewed interest in the platform.
The executive order signed by Trump requires federal agencies to update databases and maps with the new name ‘Lake America.’ Trump stressed the geographic importance of the lake to America, yet Canada’s leadership dismissed the renaming, citing historical and cultural significance.
MapQuest’s resistance aligned with past actions. They previously opposed Trump’s attempt to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, offering a similar user-driven naming option. This approach reinforced their brand’s commitment to choice and independence.
Contrarily, Google Maps adapted its display based on user location, showing ‘Lake America’ to U.S. users. Meanwhile, Canadian users continue to see the original name, ‘Lake Ontario.’
The controversy also brings attention to Lake Ontario’s origins. With a name derived from the Wendat language, its history extends back centuries. Canadian leaders emphasize this heritage when opposing the name change.
