Secretary of State Marco Rubio is on a significant diplomatic mission in Delhi. His task involves easing tensions caused by President Trump’s recent actions toward India and his overtures to China.
During President Trump’s visit to Beijing, he praised Xi Jinping, calling him both a great leader and a friend. He expressed optimism about a future partnership with China’s leader, but his decision to fly home without meeting other Asian leaders raised concerns. He also mentioned revisiting arms sales to Taiwan, triggering anxiety about U.S. commitments in Asia.
Indian leaders, particularly, feel uneasy. Instead of direct discussions with President Trump, they are engaging with Secretary Rubio, who is visiting India for the first time in this capacity. His four-day visit began with a stop at Mother Teresa’s charity in Kolkata and included a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi.
Rubio extended an invitation from President Trump for Modi to visit the White House. The discussions touched on enhancing trade and defense ties. As part of the visit, Rubio will clarify the U.S. Asia policy, given Trump’s focus on cooperation with Xi. Meetings in Delhi will include discussions with diplomatic leaders from Japan and Australia, set to discuss regional partnership known as the Quad.
These developments follow President Trump’s lack of reassurance to American allies during his Beijing visit, which has left regional partners apprehensive about the U.S. role in Asia.
