Marist Falls Short in State Semifinal, Kyros Shows Her Skills

PEORIA — Marist junior Lexi Kyros faced challenges at the plate during the Class 4A state semifinal game, but her defensive performance was noteworthy. Despite Marist’s 2-1 loss to Lincoln-Way West, Kyros demonstrated her potential as a top college recruit and Michigan commit.

In a short span, Kyros thwarted two critical plays: she eliminated one runner at home and another attempting to steal second base. Her focus on minimizing pitches for her team is driven by her desire for their success. “I want everything for this team,” Kyros expressed. Her efforts remain focused on maximizing outs and contributing optimally.

Following the defeat at Louisville Slugger Sports Complex, Kyros remained positive. “I didn’t execute when I had to,” she acknowledged. Yet, Marist’s only run resulted from Ellie Holmstrom’s double and Alia Rowles’ RBI squeeze bunt in the fourth inning.

Earlier in the season, Marist triumphed over Lincoln-Way West 11-5. However, differing weather conditions in Peoria impacted Marist’s performance, resulting in missed scoring opportunities. Kyros admitted, “We just left too many girls on base.” Nevertheless, her defensive play in the bottom of the third was remarkable, ending Lincoln-Way West’s lead.

“She’s a leader,” Maddie Rogers stated. “She’s a team player. Without her plays back there, it’s a whole different game.”

Marist coach Colleen Phelan praised Kyros’ readiness and contribution, emphasizing her importance to the team. The game concluded with Kyros expressing her determination to improve. “I know I can do more next year,” she declared, anticipating future opportunities.

Marist’s defeat was a step forward from last year’s performance. They will face Oswego on Saturday in the third-place game, aiming to end the season positively. Kyros represents the drive and potential for continued team growth.
