Maryland Legislators Plan Special Session on Redistricting

The Maryland legislature will hold a special session next month following a proposal by Democratic lawmakers for a constitutional amendment on redistricting. This move comes within the context of a national strategy by Democrats to respond to recent Republican-led gerrymandering efforts in Southern states.

Senate President Bill Ferguson from Baltimore City, a Democrat, emphasized the importance of this session. The proposed amendment aims to address what many see as a challenge to fair representation.

Unfortunately, the timing of this development means it will not affect the upcoming fall midterms. New districts that favor Republicans have already been established in the South. Some of these districts were carved from areas with large Black populations, following a Supreme Court decision that weakened the Voting Rights Act.
