At least 10 people were wounded in a mass shooting in downtown Tucson, Arizona. The incident occurred early Sunday morning when a gunman opened fire in a crowded entertainment area, according to authorities.
The suspect’s identity remains undisclosed. Officials reported that as the suspect attempted to flee, a responding police officer shot him, leaving him in life-threatening condition. He was transported to a local hospital. Luckily, no fatalities have been reported.
According to Mayor Regina Romero, nine victims sustained gunshot injuries, primarily to their arms and legs. “Last night, Tucson experienced another serious and senseless act of gun violence,” Romero stated. She described how the shooter began firing in a crowded area, hitting nine people before a police officer intervened.
The shooting took place around 2 a.m. on East Congress Street, a downtown area popular for its nightlife. Officers nearby heard gunshots and responded immediately, encountering a man fleeing the scene.
A Tucson Police Department forensics photographer documented the site where nine individuals were hurt during the shooting in Tucson on July 19, 2026.
When officers commanded the suspect to stop, he allegedly ignored them. A uniformed officer then fired his weapon, hitting the suspect. Tucson Police Department reported that police took him into custody and provided first aid before Tucson Fire Department personnel transported him to a hospital.
Responding officers gave emergency medical assistance to several victims until firefighters arrived. All wounded individuals were sent to local hospitals for treatment. Fortunately, no officers suffered injuries.
Romero acknowledged the rapid actions and care provided by firefighters and police, expressing hope for the victims’ recovery. Pima County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the officer-involved shooting, while Tucson Police Department conducts a separate probe to check for policy violations.
Mayor Regina Romero spoke at the Democratic National Convention held in Chicago on Aug. 19, 2024. She denounced the shooting and criticized Arizona’s gun safety regulations, which she described as weak.
Romero advocates for improvements in gun safety laws, emphasizing the need for universal background checks, extreme risk laws, and increased funding for violence prevention. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department did not offer immediate commentary to Fox News Digital.
