Jury selection has commenced in the trial of Lindsay Clancy, a Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children while receiving psychiatric treatment. The trial, expected to span several weeks, will delve into postpartum psychosis, a complex condition affecting some women after childbirth. Clancy’s defense team, including her husband, argues she was not in control of her actions when the tragic events occurred.
Defense attorney Kevin Reddington acknowledges that Clancy did kill her children but intends to use an insanity defense. He describes the case as an “extreme tragedy.” Prosecutors, however, argue that the killings were intentional and meticulously planned. Clancy, a former labor and delivery nurse, has pleaded not guilty to murder charges related to the deaths of her children: Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months, on January 24, 2023.

The incident unfolded when Clancy asked her husband, Patrick Clancy, to leave their home for takeout and a pharmacy errand. During his absence, she strangled the children with exercise bands and attempted suicide multiple times. She survived a fall from the second-story window but remains paralyzed and is held at a state hospital. Patrick Clancy appears as a witness for both prosecution and defense and has publicly forgiven his wife.
The jury for the trial in Plymouth is expected to include 18 jurors, with six alternates, chosen over several days. Lindsay and Patrick Clancy have initiated lawsuits against her medical providers, criticizing them for not properly diagnosing or managing her severe postpartum psychiatric condition. Lindsay had been treated in a psychiatric hospital leading up to the incident.
Lindsay Clancy’s lawsuit mentions her battles with depression, insomnia, and auditory hallucinations urging violence. She sought help from various medical facilities, communicating her deteriorating condition. She expressed concerns about the medication worsening her state. On the day of the killings, voices urged her to commit the acts, as noted in Patrick Clancy’s lawsuit referencing medical records.
