Matt Damon has undergone a dramatic transformation for his role in “The Odyssey,” directed by Christopher Nolan. The Oscar-winning actor has eliminated gluten from his diet, a change he describes as life-altering.
Embracing a New Lifestyle
In a revealing discussion on Amy Poehler’s “Good Hang” podcast, Damon shared his journey towards a gluten-free lifestyle. The actor, who turned 53, stated that removing gluten fundamentally transformed his health and fitness.
“It’s just a complete lifestyle change,” Damon remarked, referencing his intense physical regimen for the film. He explained that to achieve the desired physique, he drastically altered his diet, focusing on less caloric intake and cutting gluten entirely.
Uncovering Hidden Sensitivities
Damon realized his sensitivity to gluten while undergoing rigorous training. “I didn’t know,” he confessed. His findings align with Poehler’s observation that many from their generation were unaware of such dietary sensitivities during their formative years.
Despite his love for bread, beer, and pasta, Damon admitted, “how I feel now is just better.” The decision to cut gluten has been decisive in his improved well-being.
Transforming for ‘The Odyssey’
Earlier this year, Damon discussed his extensive preparation for the role of Greek hero Odysseus on Travis and Jason Kelce’s “New Heights” podcast. The actor reduced his weight to 167 pounds, the lightest he has been since high school.
Director Christopher Nolan had a clear vision for Damon’s character. “He wanted me lean but strong,” Damon explained. Achieving this meant dedication, a strict diet, and working closely with a personal trainer.
A History of Dedication
This transformation is not the first in Damon’s career. For the 1996 film “Courage Under Fire,” he lost between 40 and 50 pounds over 100 days. This drastic change came with potential health risks; a doctor cautioned him about the possibility of permanently shrinking his heart.
These experiences underscore Damon’s commitment to his roles, showing his willingness to undertake significant lifestyle changes.
