Maverick Ohle’s Transition to North Central College
Maverick Ohle made a strategic move by transferring from Ohio University to North Central College, a choice that brought him closer to home. The Naperville Central graduate quickly became a key player for the NCAA Division III team. Measuring 6-foot-2 and weighing 282 pounds, Ohle stood out in his sophomore season. He expressed his enthusiasm for joining NCC, stating, “If you want to be in DIII, this is the place to be. It’s been great.”
Role in Replacing John Sullivan
Ohle plays a significant role in replacing John Sullivan, last year’s Division III defensive player of the year. Sullivan’s leadership on the defensive line helped the Cardinals reach the national championship game for six consecutive seasons. Ohle, now accustomed to the team dynamics, is prepared to fill Sullivan’s shoes alongside teammate Graham Wight. They have both committed to being the most aggressive unit possible.
“We knew that the two defensive tackles would be Graham and I,” Ohle explained. “We worked all offseason to do that. Once we got into camp, we just decided that we were going to be the most violent unit we could be.”
Upcoming Challenges
Ohle and Wight will showcase their skills in an upcoming match against No. 2 Bethel at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium in Naperville. Head coach Brad Spencer recognizes their potential, stating, “You want your leaders that graduate to be remembered, not missed. That cycle, we’re used to it.”
Ohle had a notable performance last season, with 35 tackles, seven for loss, and two sacks. He earned a spot on the All-CCIW first-team and All-Region third-team selections. Despite initial challenges playing next to Sullivan, Ohle developed a fruitful relationship that improved both players’ abilities.
“At first, it was hard to play next to him just because he created that much attention. But then as he and I developed our relationship, he just made me a better player, and I made him a better player,” Ohle said.
From High School to College
Ohle’s capabilities were recognized by Spencer early on during his high school days at Naperville Central. “The sky is the limit for Mav,” Spencer commented. “He’s put the work in, and that’s the thing. You have to put the work in. He’s done that, so there’s trust there.”
Ohle’s understanding of college football’s tough realities emerged while at Ohio University. Following a MAC championship win, Coach Tim Albin resigned, leaving Ohle and his teammates in uncertainty. “The future was uncertain,” Ohle reflected. “I knew I had to get into the portal.”
Returning to North Central became a seamless integration into a close-knit community. “When I got here last year, the first thing I realized is that North Central is its own little community. The relationships have been amazing.”
