A new television advertisement featuring Mayor Zohran Mamdani premiered on Wednesday night. It aired during the postgame show following the New York Knicks’ Game 1 win in the NBA finals. The 30-second ad focuses on supporting three Democrats running for House seats in New York City.
The advertisement aims to boost the campaigns of left-leaning Democrats in competitive primaries across the city. It seeks to leverage Mr. Mamdani’s popularity and the city’s excitement over the Knicks. The featured candidates are Darializa Avila Chevalier, Claire Valdez, and Brad Lander. Both Mr. Lander and Ms. Avila Chevalier are challenging current officeholders, while Ms. Valdez is pursuing an open seat.
In the ad, filmed on a basketball court with a Knicks-inspired orange backdrop, Mr. Mamdani says, “This is the team. This is our year.” This statement underscores the team’s ambition and the shared vision of these candidates.
The ad, crafted by Morris Katz, the mayor’s top political aide, had its placement on regional television costing about $110,000. This cost is divided among the three congressional campaigns.
Mr. Mamdani also provided a written statement emphasizing, “It’s a new era in Knicks’ basketball, and it’s time for the same in our politics too.” He praised the candidates for their fighting spirit, selflessness, and love for New York City.
