Mel Gibson has apologized after a video showed him seemingly mocking a sign language interpreter during a recent event. The incident took place at the Fan Expo Canada panel in Toronto, where Gibson was a featured speaker.
According to attendees, Gibson, 70, waved to the crowd before appearing to mimic the behavior of the American Sign Language (ASL) interpreter on stage. Addressing the situation, Gibson stated to Fox News Digital, “Sometimes when you’re on stage, your mind is in many places, and thoughtless actions can occur.” He further clarified that there was no harmful intent and apologized to anyone upset by his actions.
The backlash spread quickly online after Gibson’s appearance at the panel discussion titled “From Braveheart to Mad Max: A Q&A with Mel Gibson.” Social media users commented on the incident, criticizing Gibson for his actions. One user remarked on the behavior, saying it seemed unnecessarily disrespectful to a professional doing their job. During the expo, Gibson also confirmed his ongoing work on the post-production of “The Resurrection of the Christ” in Toronto. Additionally, news emerged of Gibson’s appointment as a Special Ambassador to Hollywood alongside Jon Voight and Sylvester Stallone, announced by President Donald Trump. This appointment aims to revitalize Hollywood and confront challenges faced by the industry.
