Erik and Lyle Menendez are set for a parole hearing in March 2027, one year ahead of the initial schedule. Both brothers were convicted of murdering their parents, Jose and Mary Louise ‘Kitty’ Menendez, in their Beverly Hills home on Aug. 20, 1989. Originally, they were expected to have their parole hearing in August 2028. Fox News confirms this change.
The advancement of the hearing date is linked to Proposition 9. This proposition allows for an inmate’s parole hearing to be rescheduled if new information or changed circumstances suggest the individual may be suitable for parole, as reported by The Orange County Register.
‘For almost 40 years, Erik and Lyle have worked to take responsibility for their actions, confront and heal from the unimaginable abuse and trauma they endured, grow as individuals, and dedicate themselves to serving others,’ a statement from family members mentioned.
The brothers have been involved in positive endeavors during their incarceration. They contributed by helping establish a hospice program and creating Green Space. Their goal is to show that life sentences still hold meaning, encouraging personal growth, healing, and accountability.
Initially sentenced to life without parole, their sentence was adjusted to life in May 2025, allowing for parole eligibility. This change followed renewed public interest in their case, notably after a Netflix series reignited discussions on their freedom. Despite being denied parole last year, efforts from their supporters continue.
Lyle and Erik Menendez are incarcerated at the Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility in San Diego. They claim years of abuse by their father led to the murders, while prosecutors argue the killings were driven by greed. The family appreciates the Parole Board’s decision to advance the hearing, expressing pride in the brothers’ growth and actions during their confinement.
