The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced the cancellation of its spring 2027 exhibit dedicated to designer John Galliano. This decision has cast doubt over the next year’s Met Gala, which usually opens with this event.
Decision Following Controversy
Museum director Max Hollein, in a statement, shared that after discussions with John Galliano, the decision was made not to move forward with the exhibition. The initial announcement in July to honor Galliano sparked backlash due to his previously antisemitic and racist statements from 2010 and 2011.

Galliano’s Apology
In a social media post, Galliano expressed his apologies for his past remarks and decided to step away from the exhibition. He stated the decision came after considerable reflection and discussion with The Met and others involved. Galliano acknowledged the harm his words caused, particularly to Jewish and Asian communities, and emphasized his deep regret.
Legacy and Future Plans
Despite a 2011 conviction in a French court, Galliano remains an influential figure in fashion. He gained significant recognition as the creative director of Christian Dior, a position he held for 15 years until his dismissal due to the controversy. He later led Maison Margiela starting in 2014, holding the position for a decade.
Galliano is well-regarded by Anna Wintour, who annually organizes the Met Gala. The museum has stated that a new exhibit will replace the canceled one.
