Mexico Hosts Iran’s World Cup Team Amid U.S. Visa Issues

Mexico’s Role in Hosting Iran’s World Cup Team

Mexico has agreed to host Iran’s World Cup squad during the tournament after the United States declined to accommodate them. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed this development during her daily press briefing, following inquiries from FIFA. Despite Iran playing all Group G matches in the U.S., their base operations will be across the border in Mexico.

Sheinbaum explained, “The United States doesn’t want the Iranian national team to stay overnight in the United States,” adding that FIFA queried Mexico’s willingness to host. Mexico accepted, asserting no issues in facilitating Iran’s stay. Inquiries made to the White House and State Department for comments on this decision remain unanswered.

Change of Iran’s Base Camp

Mehdi Taj, head of the Iranian Football Federation, announced the shift of the team’s base camp from Tucson, Arizona, to Tijuana. This relocation arose from visa complications and security concerns linked to the U.S.-Israel military actions against Iran. Tijuana offers proximity to both the Pacific Ocean and the U.S.-Mexico border, facilitating travel logistics.

Taj noted the move allows the squad to bypass visa hurdles and directly reach Mexico via Iran Air flights. Tijuana is a strategic location, only a 55-minute flight from Los Angeles, where Iran will play two matches.

Challenges Leading to Iran’s Base Move

Iran’s World Cup participation faced uncertainties for months. Initially, Iran’s football federation requested moving matches to Mexico from the U.S. due to security concerns. FIFA maintained the team’s U.S. schedule, with FIFA President Gianni Infantino emphasizing unity.

Iranian officials reported the team hadn’t received U.S. visas, weeks before the tournament. The applications were submitted from Turkey during pre-tournament training. U.S. President Donald Trump expressed conditional support in March, highlighting safety concerns.

Iran’s Match Schedule

Iran’s matches include facing New Zealand on June 15 at SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California, Belgium on June 21 at the same location, and Egypt on June 26 in Seattle. The tournament spans June 11 to July 19 across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

This marks Iran’s fourth consecutive World Cup appearance, though the team has yet to advance past the group stage.

Visa Complications for Other Teams

Iran isn’t the only team encountering visa issues. The U.S. has imposed restrictions on 39 countries and demands a $15,000 visa bond from fans of 50 nations. Exemptions were made for fans from Algeria, Cape Verde, Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Tunisia with specific qualifications, while Haiti and Iran face complete travel bans.

The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) faces stringent restrictions due to an Ebola outbreak. Visa issuance for DRC nationals is suspended, alongside a ban preventing non-Americans who visited DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan within 21 days prior from entering the U.S. Despite this, DRC’s World Cup participation is allowed, overriding Ebola-related entry bans.
