Senator Tom Cotton from Arkansas discussed the influence of democratic socialists on the Democratic Party. This was in the context of reflecting on Senator Lindsey Graham’s legacy on a show called ‘Life, Liberty & Levin.’ Jewish voters in Michigan might significantly impact the Senate election in November. Many lifelong Democratic voters from Michigan’s Jewish community are contemplating voting for Republican Mike Rogers over Democrat Abdul El-Sayed.
The previous Senate race in Michigan was decided by a mere 19,006 votes. The state has an estimated Jewish population of around 105,000 to 130,000 adults, which could potentially shift the balance in Rogers’ favor. Matthew Knee, a Republican pollster, highlighted that Republicans have previously gained ground in Jewish areas, and this trend may continue with candidates like Rogers and El-Sayed.
Abdul El-Sayed, a progressive candidate, has caused concern among Jewish voters due to his stance on Israel and Zionism. Some voters feel their safety and the liberal values they support are at odds due to El-Sayed’s positions. Steve Cohen, a Michigan resident, emphasized recent attacks on Jewish places of worship and rising antisemitism as influencing factors for considering voting Republican.
Lifelong liberals like Benji are now contemplating choosing safety over party loyalty. They’ve traditionally supported causes like LGBT rights, women’s healthcare, and gun control. However, El-Sayed’s perceived requirement for Jews to be anti-Zionist has caused distress. Stacy, another longtime Democrat, feels alienated from her party due to the perceived hostility against Israel supporters.
Mike Rogers, with a background as Army officer and FBI special agent, is seen as a strong contender. Jewish voters, who comprise about 1.4% of Michigan’s electorate, have historically been a critical constituency for Democrats, especially in politically pivotal Detroit suburbs. Jesse Arm of the Manhattan Institute noted the high turnout and support Jewish voters have provided to Democrats.
Some Jewish Democrats are reconsidering their support, with many opting to support Mike Rogers outright. Sam Markstein from the Republican Jewish Coalition pointed out that Jewish voters have shown significant support for Rogers over El-Sayed in primary results from key areas. This voting bloc can shift the outcome in a closely contested election.
El-Sayed faced criticism for his response to an attack at a Michigan synagogue, which raised further concerns among Jewish voters. Despite condemning the attack, he faced backlash for reflecting on Middle East violence and appearing to justify the attacker. El-Sayed asserts his commitment to fighting antisemitism and supporting the Jewish community’s safety.
Although some in the Jewish community feel let down by the Democratic Party, there is a caution against abandoning it completely. The Jewish Federation of Detroit and other organizations continue advocating against antisemitism and for community safety.
Rabbi Aaron Starr highlighted the rejection of extremism across the political spectrum by American Jews, emphasizing the current anxiety due to perceived growing extremism on the left. For voters like Benji and Stacy, supporting Republican Rogers represents a conflict of their Democratic values against their safety concerns.
