Military Deployment at Southwest Border: Costs and Concerns

For over a year, the Pentagon has stationed around 9,000 active-duty troops along nearly 2,000 miles of the southwest border. Their mission is to address illegal migration, smugglers, and drug cartels.

Despite achieving a significant decrease in illegal crossings months ago, these forces remain stationed at the border. The operation incurs expenses of tens of millions of dollars each week.

The troops collaborate closely with Customs and Border Protection and the Mexican military. Their efforts have forced Mexican cartels and smugglers into more secluded, mountainous regions to avoid detection.

However, U.S. officials report rising threats to American troops stationed there. This situation has led some members of Congress to question the deployment’s efficacy.

Lawmakers and independent analysts express concerns. They worry the border missions may distract from essential training. There’s also concern about the potential draining of resources and undermining of military readiness. These troops could otherwise be preparing for deployments in regions like Eastern Europe, the Middle East, or the Indo-Pacific.
