Minnesota Lynx End Indiana Fever’s Winning Streak with 108-100 Victory

The Indiana Fever faced a challenging road schedule, and it finally caught up with them on Sunday. The Minnesota Lynx, the best team in the WNBA, ended the Fever’s five-game winning streak with a 108-100 victory at home. This win improved the Lynx’s record to 25-6 and extended their own winning streak to ten consecutive games. Meanwhile, the Fever’s record dropped to 19-11.

The Fever’s busy schedule included a difficult stretch of travel and games. They played their third road game within six days, visiting Seattle, Portland, and Minneapolis. The game in Minneapolis started just 36 hours after their late game in Portland on Friday. Despite this, Indiana demonstrated resilience, showing they had plenty of fight left.

During the game, Minnesota appeared to secure victory when Courtney Williams hit a jumper, giving the Lynx a 98-84 lead with 5:39 remaining. However, Indiana responded with a 14-2 run to bring the score to 100-98, forcing Minnesota to focus under pressure. Key plays by Olivia Miles and Courtney Williams helped the Lynx close out the game.

Olivia Miles played a crucial role, contributing 28 points on 11-of-14 shooting. Williams added 27 points, resulting in a combined 55 points from the two Minnesota guards. For the Fever, Kelsey Mitchell was a standout, scoring 37 points on 14-of-21 shooting and making six out of eight three-point attempts. Caitlin Clark facilitated the offense, achieving 19 points and 10 assists, marking her eighth double-double this season. Aliyah Boston added 15 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists.

The Fever’s offense was efficient, shooting 57% from the field and scoring at least 100 points for the sixth consecutive game, the longest streak in WNBA history. However, defensively, the team appeared fatigued at times. Their recent scheduling likely contributed to this challenge.

After playing in Portland on Friday night, the team traveled two time zones east to face Minnesota by Sunday. This demanding schedule included three road games in three different cities within nine days, all following the WNBA All-Star Game held in Chicago. As a result, players like Caitlin Clark and others raised concerns about the lack of recovery time and how it impacted their performance.

ESPN reported that Caitlin Clark was feeling unwell before Sunday’s game. While the Fever did not provide further details, the timing highlighted the ongoing scheduling issue. Notably, the WNBA’s decision positioned the Fever in a highly anticipated national TV game on ABC, yet the scheduling did not allow them to be at their best.

There is a silver lining for Indiana: they now have a brief break. With their next game against the Las Vegas Aces on Thursday, the Fever have three days to recover from this grueling stretch. The team, and particularly its All-Star players, will likely welcome the chance to rest after a demanding schedule that saw them crisscross the country.
