Minnesota Officials Release Details on Minneapolis Apartment Shooting

Minnesota officials have identified the victims in the recent Minneapolis apartment shooting. This incident led to the deaths of two civilians and injuries to two police officers.

Victims Identified

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) named the two deceased civilians as Dale Henry Spry, 63, and Muse A. Afrah, 61. Both individuals were residents of the apartment complex where the shooting occurred. One victim died at the scene while the other succumbed to injuries at a hospital.

Shooter and Circumstances

The gunman, 35-year-old Carlton Neal Johnson II, opened fire before being fatally shot by police. An autopsy indicated multiple gunshot wounds causing his death, classified as a homicide. Reports suggest Johnson was facing eviction from the apartment building.

Injured Officers and Other Details

The injured Minneapolis Police Department officers are Joseph Michnowski, with five years of service, and Yahye Ahmed, nearly two years with the department. Ahmed has been discharged from the hospital, but Michnowski remains hospitalized, as stated by Interim Police Chief Bill Peterson.

Garrett Parten, an MPD public information officer, informed that one of the officers sustained a non-life-threatening leg wound and the other required surgery. A third officer, Ernest Boateng, was injured by glass while trying to access a locked police vehicle and has been evaluated and released.

Investigation and Motive

The BCA confirmed at least one officer, Liban Mohamed Ibrahim, a two-year veteran, discharged a firearm during the incident. Investigators are examining if other officers also fired.

The shooting involved a domestic child custody exchange with a woman once related to Johnson, according to BCA Superintendent Drew Evans. Johnson allegedly shot the woman outside the building, injured another building worker, and continued to the ninth floor where he shot two residents. His eviction from the building is noted in court records.

There is no confirmation about whether Johnson intentionally targeted the victims.
