Former medical device executive Mike Minogue has clinched the Massachusetts gubernatorial primary, overcoming Brian Shortsleeve, a former MBTA executive. Minogue will now face Democratic Governor Maura Healey, who seeks re-election for a second term. Massachusetts maintains a strong Democratic presence in Congress since 1996; however, Republicans have experienced notable success in gubernatorial races since the Reagan era.
Minogue showcased his business acumen during his campaign, highlighting his tenure at GE Healthcare and his leadership at Abiomed, based in Danvers. Minogue emphasized Abiomed’s development of the world’s smallest heart pump and the expansion of its headquarters, which boosted job creation and enhanced its capabilities within Massachusetts.
Kevin O’Leary, renowned as “Mr. Wonderful” from Shark Tank, appeared in one of Minogue’s campaign videos. He remarked, “Massachusetts is ‘dead-money’ now. We need a guy like this to run the show.”
In a last-minute advertisement, Governor Healey labeled Minogue as “MAGA Mike,” indicating that he has caught her attention. Minogue secured the endorsement of the state’s GOP convention with 70% of votes, while Shortsleeve narrowly qualified for the ballot.
Minogue’s campaign raised over $7.5 million in the first quarter, with $7 million being self-funded. Shortsleeve raised approximately $646,500 during the same period. Governor Healey was renominated without opposition, and Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll also advances uncontested.
Republicans face challenges in Massachusetts, where they lack candidates in about half of the congressional districts and in races for secretary of state and state auditor. Anne Manning Martin, a candidate for lieutenant governor, is running a write-in campaign due to signature issues.
Republicans have previously held the governor’s office from 1997 to the end of former Governor Mitt Romney’s term in 2007. Romney opted against re-election and pursued the presidency against Barack Obama. Prior Republican governors included Governor William Weld, Governor Paul Cellucci, and Governor Jane Swift.
Former Gov. Charlie Baker, a Republican, preceded Governor Healey from 2015 to 2023. Historically, Democrats and Republicans have alternated control over the governor’s office in Massachusetts.
