A Mississippi teenager is accused of breaking into an elderly couple’s home and killing them. He then allegedly engaged in a standoff with police. Authorities say Cordarius Hobbs, 17, broke into the Mendenhall residence of 74-year-old Billy Blair and 71-year-old Virginia Carol Blair. This tragic incident occurred on June 3, according to WLBT.
Simpson County Sheriff’s Office received a call from family members who couldn’t reach the couple. Deputies arrived at about 12:24 p.m. on June 3. They were met with gunfire, officials stated. Department of Public Safety spokesperson Bailey Martin mentioned that a burglary was in progress when deputies arrived and that both officials and civilians were “pinned down by gunfire.”
Although Rankin County Sheriff Bryan Bailey noted that the suspect expressed his intent to surrender at the front door, Hobbs instead fled through the back, leading to a chase. During this pursuit, a deputy was shot.
Mississippi state troopers eventually shot and arrested Hobbs. He was hospitalized with injuries that were not life-threatening. Hobbs faces multiple charges, including two counts of capital murder, one count of burglary, and several counts of aggravated assault.
The couple’s family expressed their grief on Facebook, saying, “We are crushed in spirit, bruised, and brokenhearted, but we are not alone.” A family friend, Jason Busby, described the Blairs as selfless, stating, “The man would’ve given you the shirt off his back, his wife is the same, and they’re just great people. It’s just a tragedy. Everybody around here is still in shock. They were just good people.”
