The long Major League Baseball season is winding down to its final weeks, with the Chicago Cubs and the Chicago White Sox deeply involved in the playoff chase. Both teams are nearing crucial stages in their respective divisions as they compete to secure spots in the postseason.
Cubs’ Playoff Position
The Cubs have held onto second place in the National League Central for the fourth year in a row, trailing behind the Milwaukee Brewers, who are set to claim their fourth consecutive division title. Entering Monday, the Cubs boast an 83-67 record. Their magic number for clinching a wild-card spot stands at nine, while their elimination number stands at two for the NL Central title.
In their recent encounter, the Cubs experienced a narrow 4-3 defeat against the Pittsburgh Pirates. With 12 games left in the regular season, the Cubs hold the top spot in the NL wild card, level with the Phillies and 1.5 games ahead of the Padres. The Diamondbacks remain in contention, 2.5 games behind the Padres.
The Cubs last appeared in the postseason in 2025 as the top wild card, defeating the Padres 2-1 in the wild-card series before losing to the Brewers 3-2 in the division series. - Division Series: Occurring from Oct. 3-10, it follows a best-of-five format (2-2-1). The No. 1 seed faces the winner of the No. 4/5 match, while the No. 2 seed confronts the winner of the No. 3/6 match.
- League Championship Series: Running from Oct. 11-20, it adopts a best-of-seven format (2-3-2).
- World Series: Scheduled for Oct. 23-31, follows a best-of-seven setup (2-3-2).
