Meteorologists are keeping a close eye on a low-pressure system along the Texas coastline. This system has a potential to become the first named storm of the 2026 Atlantic hurricane season, which started earlier this month. In the Atlantic, the hurricane season officially covers the period from June 1 to November 30. Most tropical storms and hurricanes tend to form during this time.
Possibility of Storm Arthur
The National Hurricane Center (NHC) provided an update early Wednesday morning. It reported that the system is moving northeast along the middle Texas coast and is expected to move inland over southwestern Louisiana by Wednesday night. The NHC has noted that this system could lead to life-threatening flash flooding in parts of the Southeastern United States.
“Some strengthening is forecast, and the disturbance could become a tropical storm today,” the NHC mentioned. “Weakening is anticipated once the low moves inland, and it could dissipate by tonight or early Thursday.”
The agency has assessed a 60 percent chance of development within the next 48 hours. Expected rainfall amounts are between 5 to 10 inches through early Friday, with some areas possibly experiencing as much as 20 inches. The affected areas include the upper Texas coast, southern and central Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, parts of western Georgia, and the Florida Panhandle. Such rainfall could lead to dangerous and life-threatening flash flooding according to NHC warnings.
Flood watches have been issued by the National Weather Service, covering southeastern Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, the western Florida Panhandle, and parts of Georgia. Additionally, a tropical storm warning is in effect from Sabine Pass to Morgan City, and a tropical storm watch is active from Sargent to Sabine Pass.
