A bombing at a luxury restaurant in Moscow on Saturday resulted in the death of three people and left at least 21 others injured. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin labeled the incident a ‘brutal terrorist act’ and pledged to identify those accountable.
Mayor Sobyanin made his statement on Sunday, following the explosion at the Balzi Rossi Italian restaurant. He shared on social media, ‘Yesterday, a brutal terrorist act was committed in Moscow that claimed human lives. The victims are currently in the city’s hospitals, where they are receiving all necessary care.’
Explosion at a Restaurant in Central Moscow Leaves Three Dead, More than a Dozen Injured
Police secured the area near the site of the explosion, which occurred on Saturday, August 1, 2026. The blast took place at around 8 p.m. local time at Kudrinskaya Square and involved a homemade explosive device, as reported by Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee.
According to the Russian state news agency RIA Novosti, a woman attempted to enter the restaurant carrying the bomb but was stopped by a security guard before it detonated. The explosion killed the woman, the security guard, and a restaurant patron.
The Balzi Rossi restaurant was hosting a private event at the time of the blast, and the establishment was not open to the general public. Video footage released by Russian state media displayed heavily armed police, ambulances, and emergency vehicles outside the damaged venue as investigators conducted their work.
Earlier this year, the Federal Security Service of Russia (FSB) announced plans to enhance security for high-ranking military and government figures, following several assassination attempts in major Russian cities.
Russian authorities have not yet identified any suspects or connected the bombing to ongoing conflicts, such as the war in Ukraine. The investigation continues as officials search for leads.
