Multilingual Drama ‘Fjord’ Wins Palme d’Or at Cannes Film Festival

The 79th Cannes Film Festival concluded with the Palme d’Or going to Fjord, a film directed by Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu. The film addresses the clash between religious conservatism and social liberalism, featuring Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve as a devout Christian couple accused of child abuse.

Mungiu, while switching between English and French, emphasized the importance of cinema tackling relevant societal issues. He noted the division and radicalization in today’s world. In Fjord, a family matter escalates into headline news, highlighting this cultural divide.

This win marks Mungiu’s second Palme d’Or; he first won in 2007 with 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days. This year’s festival seemed subdued compared to last year’s, impacted by the absence of major American studios and global stars.

The festival lacked a critically favored film in the main competition, intensifying the muted atmosphere. Despite this, the jury appreciated several films, although expressions of ‘love’ were rare.

Top accolades for best director, actress, and actor saw joint winners. Jury head Park Chan-wook highlighted the diversity of the panel, which included actress Demi Moore and director Chloé Zhao.

Polish director Paweł Pawlikowski shared the best director award for Fatherland with Spanish filmmakers Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi. Their film, La Bola Negra, spans different historical periods, weaving stories around an unfinished play by Federico García Lorca, killed at the start of the Spanish Civil War.
