As of late August 2026, Myles Garrett has yet to make his debut in a Los Angeles Rams uniform. The star player missed both of the Rams’ initial preseason games and has been absent from 12 practices due to knee swelling and soreness. Initially, the issue seemed minor, but apprehension grows with the regular season’s proximity.
Head Coach Sean McVay addressed the situation on Tuesday, describing Garrett’s absence as a precautionary measure. He stated, “The goal is, what can we do to be able to get him ready to roll for Australia?” The Rams aim to have Garrett fit for their opening game against the 49ers in Melbourne, Australia, on September 10.
This matchup marks the first NFL game held in Australia and features two ambitious Super Bowl contenders. McVay emphasizes the importance of prioritizing Garrett’s readiness for the regular season rather than preseason appearances.
The Rams boast a strong roster, which includes reigning MVP Matthew Stafford, elite receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, and All-Pro running back Kyren Williams. The addition of Garrett, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year, intensifies their formidable defense, which already includes talented players like Kobie Turner, Byron Young, and Braden Fiske.
If Garrett’s injury remains minor, the Rams pose a daunting challenge for any opposing team this season. The potential return of franchise icon Aaron Donald could further enhance their capabilities.
