Nancy Pelosi is a prominent figure in American politics, having served as a Democratic leader and the former Speaker of the House of Representatives. She began her tenure in Congress in 1987, representing California’s 11th Congressional District. Pelosi plays a crucial role in leadership for the Democratic Party.
During her second term as Speaker, the House impeached former President Donald Trump on two occasions. However, the Senate acquitted him both times. She comes from a political family; her father, Thomas D’Alesandro Jr., was both a congressman and the mayor of Baltimore.
Pelosi’s husband, Paul Pelosi, is a venture capitalist who owns a consulting and real estate firm. Together, they have amassed an estimated net worth of $120 million. In May 2022, an incident involved her husband being arrested in Napa County for DUI, which resulted in a $5,000 bail after a collision with another vehicle.
As Speaker during President Obama’s administration, Pelosi was instrumental in passing critical legislation. These included the Affordable Care Act, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, and the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell Repeal Act. In 2010, she lost her Speakership when Republicans won over 63 seats, marking one of the largest congressional victories.

Between December 2018 and January 2019, disagreements over an appropriations bill to fund a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border led to a federal government shutdown. This was the longest shutdown in U.S. history. Additionally, after Trump’s 2020 State of the Union address, Pelosi made a statement by tearing up her copy of his speech.
