At 70 years old, I’ve faced a complex family history. I spent several years as a caregiver for my mother, who was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Before her illness, both she and my younger brother often treated me as though I lacked capability. Over time, this perspective influenced my own self-view, shaping my identity in ways I continue to grapple with.
My mother has since passed away, and my relationship with my brother has become estranged. Despite their past opinions, which do not define who I am, I find myself still influenced by their view. I feel like I am living within the narrative they wrote about me, which impacts my current self-perception.
