NBA Broadcaster Ernie Johnson to Retire at Season’s End

Longtime NBA broadcaster Ernie Johnson announced his retirement, which will take effect at the close of this season. Johnson shared that he made the decision after celebrating his 70th birthday last summer. This marks the end of a 37-year career in what he has often described as a ‘get to’ job.

Johnson expressed gratitude for the time spent at the desk with co-hosts Kenny Smith, Charles Barkley, and Shaquille O’Neal. He also appreciated the talented production crews he had worked with over the years. “It’s been an honor,” he said, emphasizing that the choice to retire was entirely his own.

While discussing his decision, Johnson mentioned heart issues over the past two years as a factor. He emphasized the importance of cherishing time with loved ones, expressing a desire to “slow down a bit.” Despite his retirement from “Inside the NBA,” Johnson plans to engage in other ventures with CBS and TNT, including March Madness coverage.

On an episode of ESPN’s “Inside the NBA,” Charles Barkley, a close friend and colleague, shared emotional sentiments regarding Johnson’s announcement. Barkley acknowledged the difficulty of the moment, reflecting on their 26-27 years of shared professional experiences. “You’ve been our leader,” Barkley told Johnson, affirming the positive impact Johnson had on their team.

Barkley also hinted at his own plans to leave the broadcasting realm after this season. The announcements from both Johnson and Barkley resonated deeply with fans and colleagues, prompting a wave of support from NBA figures.

The current NBA season continues on ESPN, with games highlighting teams like the Philadelphia 76ers, Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City Thunder, and Dallas Mavericks.
