In southern Tasmania, a unique visitor, Neil the elephant seal, is causing quite a stir. Unlike any local boys returning home, Neil brings with him an unusual fame. Weighing 1,000 kg (2,200 pounds), this elephant seal draws attention for his adventures and misadventures around beachside towns, creating both fanfare and commotion.
Social Media Superstar
Neil has gained a notable following on social media, surpassing the human population of Tasmania with his 1.4 million TikTok fans. Despite being a frequent visitor to the town, his behavior, which includes battling parked cars and dismantling barriers, is part of his practice for future dominance battles. According to Sophia Volzke, a scientist at the University of Tasmania, this conduct is natural for juvenile male seals preparing for adulthood.
Public Concerns
Local authorities express concern over Neil’s rising popularity. They warn of risky human-seal encounters that might endanger both parties. Kris Carlyon from the Department of Natural Resources and Environment highlights the dangers, noting past incidents where wildlife fame led to unfortunate outcomes, such as the euthanization of a crowds-drawing walrus in Norway.
Return to Roots
Neil’s visits are not unexpected, as seals traditionally return to their birthplace twice a year. However, his presence as the only male elephant seal in Tasmania is unusual. Volzke explains that female seals, common visitors ashore, reach a lesser size and thus create less chaos compared to Neil.
Future Challenges
The future for Neil remains uncertain. He may grow up to 5 meters (16 feet) and weigh three times his current size if he survives to adulthood. However, Volzke notes that only 10% of male elephant seals reach breeding maturity at around 10 years old.
Meanwhile, Neil continues to entertain and bewilder residents and authorities. He has a fondness for a specific sidewalk area, much to the delight of his online viewers. Carlyon notes that Neil’s chosen location, marked by horizontal bollards, seems to be his preferred resting spot. Residents like Dale Creamer embrace Neil’s presence, viewing him as a significant, albeit temporary, local icon.
