Good morning. It’s Wednesday. Today we explore a new chapter at a well-known Fifth Avenue location, once home to Pale Male, the famous red-tailed hawk. There’s news of a fresh addition to the family. We’ll also update you on the resolution of the Long Island Rail Road strike.
Pale Male’s former partner, Octavia, has returned to their iconic nest with a new companion and a baby chick. This news marks the continuation of a narrative that has fascinated bird enthusiasts since Pale Male rose to fame in the 1990s.
From the 1990s until 2023, Pale Male captivated many with his presence and relationships on Fifth Avenue. Now, Octavia brings new life to the nest they once shared. Stella Hamilton, who has been observing Octavia since 2014, remarked on Octavia’s selectiveness in choosing a new mate after Pale Male’s passing.
“So much drama,” Hamilton noted, reflecting on Octavia’s past relationships and the eventual stability with her new partner.
The birding community has yet to settle on a name for Octavia’s new mate. Recently, both have been engaging in typical parental duties, like fetching food such as rats or pigeons. Observers have even caught glimpses of a fluffy white chick in the nest.
In 2013, Octavia had offspring with Pale Male. D. Bruce Yolton, another bird watcher, shared his sentiment for the experiences shared with Pale Male. He expressed surprise that Octavia remains capable of raising more young despite assumptions about her age.
