New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill and Sen. Andy Kim, both Democrats, recently met with families of detainees at the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark. This facility has drawn criticism for ‘unacceptable’ conditions and an ongoing hunger strike by detainees.
Kim and Sherrill have requested access to Delaney Hall through U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). They aim to address the concerns of detainees and community advocates. Kim stated on social media, ‘Delaney Hall must be shut down immediately. ICE cannot be allowed to continue operating in this way.’
The facility, a former private detention center, now houses hundreds of illegal immigrants. Allegations of poor living conditions have led Democrats to push for its closure. During a recent visit, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson criticized Sherrill for what they termed a ‘political stunt’ on Memorial Day. The spokesperson noted that visitation was suspended due to protests outside the facility.
Approximately 125 agitators surrounded Delaney Hall, many carrying anti-ICE signs and Antifa flags. They blocked entrances and exits with barricades.
Gov. Sherrill has expressed deep concern over the conditions at Delaney Hall, stating her opposition to private detention centers. She aims to keep pressuring for the facility’s closure.
Sen. Kim and Rep. Rob Menendez attempted to gain entry to the facility but were turned away. Critics claim that detainees suffer from inadequate conditions and staff mistreatment.
The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey has described Delaney Hall as dangerous for detainees and damaging to immigrant rights. They continue to oppose its operation.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, detainees receive three meals daily, along with access to clean water, clothing, and basic hygiene provisions. DHS states that the detention standards at Delaney Hall surpass those of most U.S. prisons.
Despite these claims, Democrats remain resolute in their demand for the facility’s closure. Previous protests have ended in clashes with law enforcement, with some lawmakers participating.
Federal charges have been filed against U.S. Rep. LaMonica McIver, alleging interference with federal law enforcement. Congress members continue to debate the ethics and necessity of facilities like Delaney Hall.
