The Pediatric Oncology Treasure Chest Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Orland Park, has a new executive director, Dawn Leader-Peloso. With a background in business and theater, Leader-Peloso is enhancing the foundation’s mission to bring joy to children undergoing cancer treatment by providing them with toys.
Since taking on her role in February, Leader-Peloso has expanded the foundation’s reach, adding five new hospital partnerships across the country. These hospitals are located in the Bronx and Manhattan, New Mexico, Minnesota, and Philadelphia. The foundation now supports 58 treasure chests in hospitals nationwide, including Advocate Children’s Hospital, Comer Children’s Hospital, and Cook County Children’s Hospital in the Chicago area.
Leader-Peloso explained the foundation’s approach: “We place a treasure chest in a hospital’s cancer unit, giving kids and teens something to look forward to during their treatment. It provides a sense of normalcy and helps distract them from difficult procedures.” To support this mission, she collaborates with child-life specialists who creatively help children and families cope with the stresses of illness and treatment.
The foundation was established in 1996 by Colleen Kissell. Leader-Peloso is committed to honoring and continuing Kissell’s legacy, stating, “The founder built this organization from nothing. We aim to be good shepherds of that mission.” Her diverse skill set, including a bachelor’s degree in theater from Lewis University and a master’s degree in applied professional studies from DePaul University, contributes to the foundation’s storytelling and outreach efforts.
Leader-Peloso has a background in marketing and communications, with experience at Indiana University Northwest and Glenwood Academy. She also served as president of the Homewood Rotary Foundation. Since taking over at the Treasure Chest Foundation, she has implemented a strategic plan, upgraded shipping systems, and improved inventory and internet security.
Glen Ponczak, a board member and treasurer for the foundation, expressed optimism about the organization’s future under Leader-Peloso’s leadership, noting her success in signing up new hospital locations within a short time frame. He believes her efforts will help serve more children and strengthen the foundation.
Leader-Peloso enjoys the playful environment of her work, describing the foundation’s facility as a “giant toy warehouse” filled with board games, toy trucks, dolls, arts and crafts kits, and more for children. She is currently preparing for the foundation’s fundraising event, the 14th annual Treasuring Our Kids Gala, scheduled for November 14 at The Odyssey Country Club in Tinley Park. Tickets and additional information can be found on the foundation’s website.
The foundation is also seeking volunteers for toy drives and to assist with packing and shipping to hospitals. An annual volunteer award is being established in memory of former board member Salvatore “Sal” Cirrincione.
