During a recent gubernatorial debate, New York Governor Kathy Hochul faced criticism over her support for socialist New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Her Republican opponent, Bruce Blakeman, accused Mamdani of holding antisemitic and anti-Christian views.
Blakeman highlighted Mamdani’s actions, such as signing an executive order affecting the definition of antisemitism. He criticized Hochul’s association with Mamdani, describing the mayor as someone who opposes American values.
“You are campaigning around the state with a guy who doesn’t believe in American values,” Blakeman remarked.
Hochul chose not to directly respond, opting to address other issues. She dismissed Blakeman’s arguments as absurd and did not dignify them with a response. Her focus was on working closely with Mamdani as partners.
The debate covered several topics, including criticism of former President Donald Trump, a recent ICE-involved shooting, and economic issues like energy prices and inflation.
New York’s political landscape shows Democrats significantly outnumbering Republicans. However, Blakeman has narrowed the gap in polls, challenging Hochul for the governorship. A Siena College poll indicated Hochul’s support at 50% against Blakeman’s 41% in September.
Support for Mamdani appeared to influence perceptions of Hochul’s candidacy, with a margin favoring his endorsement. The debate underscored significant political divides as the election approached.
