The New York Knicks have finally ended a championship drought of over 50 years. With training camp underway, the team faces crucial roster decisions. The Knicks have signed five experienced players to training camp deals, but with only one or two roster spots available, choices must be made.
The Knicks specifically lack depth in the big-man position behind starters Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond. Among the group of hopefuls, James Wiseman stands out due to a connection with head coach Mike Brown.
If Wiseman makes the Knicks’ Opening Night roster, it will cement a reunion for the former No. 2 overall pick with former Warriors assistant coach Mike Brown,” NBA insider Marc Stein reported on The Stein Line.
Stein highlighted Brown’s significance, noting his recent success as the first Knicks coach to win a championship since Red Holzman. Brown worked with Wiseman during his initial seasons at the Golden State Warriors, serving under Steve Kerr.
There is a buzz that Brown is an advocate for Wiseman. The team has a need for a robust third big man. This requirement positions Wiseman as a potential fit.
However, Wiseman’s history presents challenges. Now 25 years old, he has participated in only five games over the past two years. His performance during training camp is crucial to proving his physical capabilities.
The competition doesn’t end there. Wing positions add further complexity. Bruce Brown, John Konchar, and Ochai Agbaji offer valuable skills. Every roster decision leading up to October is significant, as each player has potential.
Among the big-man candidates, Drew Eubanks is considered a reliable choice. Wiseman, on the other hand, represents a riskier option. With Towns and Drummond already on the team, stability might be tempting. Yet, Brown’s past experience with Wiseman may influence final decisions.
