Game 1 at Madison Square Garden saw a promising start for the Cavaliers, who managed to build a commanding 22-point lead over the Knicks in the fourth quarter. Despite their strong performance, the Cavaliers were unable to maintain the lead. The Knicks, with Jalen Brunson taking charge, mounted a remarkable comeback to erase the deficit and push the game into overtime.
In the crucial fourth quarter, the Knicks surged by outscoring the Cavaliers 32-18, followed by a 14-3 performance in overtime. This led to a final score of 115-104 in favor of the Knicks.
Reflecting on the match during a podcast appearance, Donovan Mitchell expressed his desire to replay that particular game in his career. He stated, “If there was ever in my nine years, going on 10. If there was ever a situation where you want a game back, I think out of all the games it’s that one. You’ve got to give credit where credit is due. They did their job, but we definitely gave them that game.”
In Game 1, Mitchell had a notable performance with 29 points, five rebounds, and three assists. However, Jalen Brunson excelled with a game-high of 38 points, along with six assists and five rebounds.
Following their victory over the Cavaliers, the New York Knicks continued their winning streak by defeating the San Antonio Spurs to clinch the NBA Finals title.
