A poll by Reuters/Ipsos showed that many Americans disagree with the renaming. Conducted over three days, the survey found that 63% opposed the change, with only 14% in favor. A portion of respondents either skipped the question or were undecided.

The survey also asked about new tariffs on Canadian goods, with 57% opposed and 20% in support. White House spokeswoman Taylor Rogers commented on the situation, stating that Canada has taken advantage of the U.S. for years. “Canada has been a bad neighbor by ripping off our country for years,” said Taylor Rogers.

On August 27, 2026, President Trump signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as “Lake America.” Interior Secretary Doug Burgum was tasked with updating the Geographic Names Information System to reflect this change.
