Neymar Returns in 2026 FIFA World Cup

Time waits for no one, and this sentiment reflects Neymars role as a late substitute in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Neymar, at 34, stands as the Brazilian men’s national team’s top scorer. His career took a hit with an ACL and meniscus tear back in October 2023. This period marked a significant break from international play for the ex-Barcelona and PSG star. Emotion ran high as Carlos Ancelotti announced Neymar’s inclusion in Brazil’s World Cup squad, yet a calf injury kept him off the field initially.

His debut came on Wednesday against Scotland in Miami. Prior to his appearance, Brazil had established control with goals from Vinícius Júnior and Matheus Cunha, leading 3-0. Neymar’s entry in the 76th minute marked his participation in a fourth World Cup.

During his time on the field, Ian Darke commented on the match’s role in easing Neymar back into play, noting that Brazil focused on securing the win. However, Neymar still electrified the crowd with every touch. A notable moment occurred in the 89th minute when Ryan Christie received a yellow card for fouling Neymar. Neymar’s free kick rebounded from Scottish players and his subsequent attempt was saved by Scotland’s goalkeeper, Angus Gunn.

Neymar also engaged in a promising play with Vini Jr., resulting in a blocked shot, which sparked optimism for their potential partnership as the tournament progresses.

With this victory, Brazil secured a place in the knockout stages, set to compete against the Group F runners-up in Houston on June 29. At present, contenders include the Netherlands, Japan, or Sweden. Brazil holds a record of five World Cup wins, unmatched since the inaugural tournament in 1930. However, their last win dates back to 2002. Overcoming this 24-year gap will be a challenge, especially due to Raphinha’s hamstring injury, yet Brazil’s talent and potential remain evident. This tournament calls for Vinícius Júnior to lead, a role previously held by Neymar, potentially marking a symbolic end to Neymar’s celebrated career.
