Purja, born in Nepal on July 25, 1983, distinguished himself as a remarkable high-altitude climber. He grew up in Myagdi district, close to the Himalayas, before embarking on a military career. At 18, he joined the British army’s elite Brigade of Gurkhas and became the first Gurkha to pass the rigorous Special Boat Service (SBS) selection. After serving a decade, he transitioned to full-time mountaineering.
In 2018, Queen Elizabeth II honored him as a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his climbing success. He co-founded Elite Exped with Mingma David Sherpa and Tejan Gurung, focusing on high-altitude expeditions with an emphasis on safety and Nepalese leadership.

In 2019, Purja achieved global recognition with “Project Possible,” ascending all 14 mountains over 8,000 meters in just 189 days. He shattered the previous seven-year record, earning multiple Guinness World Records. Netflix’s documentary highlighted this feat, showcasing his unwavering determination and military discipline.
Purja made history again by leading the first all-Nepalese team to summit K2 in winter. His accolades extended beyond personal achievements as he often risked his own goals to rescue stranded climbers.
Recent Controversies
In May 2024, allegations of sexual harassment and assault emerged in a New York Times article. Purja denied the claims through his lawyer and on Instagram, calling them “false and defamatory.” In 2025, a podcast series, Summit Justice, explored these allegations, with Purja denying them.
Furthermore, the Nepal Press Council blacklisted The Himalayan Times for “imbalanced” articles about Purja and his companies. Purja filed a complaint, resulting in a ruling against the newspaper for breaching the Journalistic Code of Conduct.
