Republican Candidate Selection
The North Carolina GOP Executive Committee for the 11th Congressional District has chosen state lawmaker Jennifer Balkcom as their nominee for the House race. This decision follows Rep. Chuck Edwards’ withdrawal from re-election, prompted by sexual harassment allegations.
Balkcom currently represents a legislative district in Henderson County and will contest the seat against Jamie Ager, the Democratic nominee from the March primary. The selection complies with state law given Edwards’ late withdrawal from the campaign.
Balkcom faces a quick campaign ramp-up with Election Day less than three months away. Absentee ballots are scheduled to be distributed starting September 4.
In her announcement for the nomination, Balkcom emphasized the importance of the race, stating, “Western North Carolina needs a strong voice right now” as it continues recovery efforts post-Hurricane Helene.
Support and Endorsements
Balkcom has received significant backing from state political figures. Notably, North Carolina House Speaker Destin Hall publicly endorsed her, describing Balkcom as “the right person at the right time.” Hall praised her as a principled conservative and tireless advocate for her district.
State GOP Executive Director Zachary Almond also expressed his enthusiasm, stating he is “excited to work alongside her” during the election cycle.
Rep. Chuck Edwards’ Departure
Rep. Chuck Edwards will complete his term but will not pursue a third term. His decision follows the House Ethics Committee’s findings of substantial evidence against him regarding sexual harassment and hostile workplaces.
Edwards has denied any wrongdoing, refuting the allegations as “unfounded,” and cooperated with the investigation.
Edwards, formerly endorsed by President Donald Trump, was elected after defeating Rep. Madison Cawthorn in the 2022 GOP primary. Previously, Mark Meadows represented the district before his tenure as White House chief of staff.
Competitive Election Outlook
In 2024, Edwards won his seat with a margin of over 13 percentage points. However, Democrats are aiming to flip the district as Republicans defend their legislative majority.
Democratic candidate Jamie Ager, a farmer, notably outraised Edwards in the campaign. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report adjusted the district rating from “Likely Republican” to “Lean Republican” following the Ethics Committee’s report.
