South Korea’s defense minister has revealed an estimate that North Korea possesses “around 80 to 120” nuclear warheads. This figure highlights the challenges in obtaining precise information about North Korea’s nuclear capabilities.
During a meeting involving President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in the Demilitarized Zone at Panmunjom, South Korea, in 2019, Trump mentioned publicly that North Korea had 57 “very powerful nuclear weapons.” However, South Korea suggests the actual number may be significantly higher.
Such estimates are difficult to refine and there are substantial limitations to providing an exact count of North Korean nuclear warheads. The South Korean government is keen to avoid public discussions concerning the specifics of North Korea’s nuclear threat due to their potential sensitivities.
Maintaining awareness of North Korea’s nuclear capabilities remains a crucial concern for South Korea and its allies.
