Notre Dame and Villanova Battle in Historic Rome Basketball Event

When Notre Dame women’s basketball coach Niele Ivey was presented with the idea, her excitement was evident. The election of Pope Leo XIV inspired college sports event organizers to arrange men’s and women’s basketball games in Rome. Villanova, where the pope attended, would represent one team. Notre Dame, another renowned Catholic university from the U.S., located close to the pope’s childhood home in Dolton, would be the opposing team.

Niele Ivey had previously taken her team to Paris in 2023 for a season opener, recognizing the unique opportunity international games offered. The chance to travel abroad was significant for her players, some of whom had never left the U.S. Her team, ranked 13th in the Associated Press poll, led by senior guard Hannah Hidalgo, was a formidable squad deserving of attention. The event was set to occur a day before the rest of the college basketball season began, potentially marking a memorable stage, along with a special audience with the pope.

“I thought this was a perfect opportunity for us to really get challenged early, but also have that experience,” Ivey remarked. “We have a really strong group of women of faith, and I felt like this is an experience that they’ll have, being able to visit the Vatican, see the Colosseum.”

Notre Dame’s significance extends beyond basketball. This journey offers life experiences while facing a formidable opponent. Notre Dame celebrated a past victory against Vanderbilt, and now the anticipation for Rome was palpable.

Both men’s and women’s teams from Notre Dame and Villanova are set to clash at the Eternal City Tip-off in Rome’s Palazzo dello Sport. Scheduled for Sunday, the venue is expected to host around 8,500 spectators, predominantly American supporters. Broadcasts are planned, with the men’s game at 8:30 a.m. CT on Fox-32 and the women’s at 11 a.m. on FS1.

The concept emerged after Pope Leo became the first American-born pope in May 2025. College basketball producer Steve Scheer suggested the idea to Fox Sports and discussions ensued with Villanova men’s coach Kevin Willard. Notably, Villanova’s athletic director Eric Roedl messaged John Anthony at sports travel company OnLocation to propose the Notre Dame and Villanova matchup in Rome. Soon, various stakeholders, including the NCAA, were involved, navigating complex arrangements.

Vatican approval was integral. Discussions included the feasibility of games in Vatican City and potential overlap with All Saints’ Day. Despite logistical challenges, Nov. 1 was designated for Rome games. Attendees secured package deals, ensuring a mass on Saturday at St. Peter’s Basilica, officiated by Archbishop Nelson J. Pérez. A papal audience was also anticipated at the Paul VI Audience Hall.

While Pope Leo’s attendance at the games remains uncertain, especially following his lung cancer diagnosis and subsequent surgery, preparations were underway. The pontiff’s recent public appearances and expected travel to South America fueled optimism for his participation.

Villanova supporters expected a strong turnout, with the pope noting a significant Villanova presence. Ticket sales mirrored this, with more sold to Villanova fans while some were reserved for Italians. However, Leo’s health remains a priority, emphasizing collective prayers and gratitude for favorable medical reports.

Ethan Roberts from Notre Dame expressed eagerness for the Rome experience, hopeful of interacting with the pope. The intent was an enriching journey, blending sports with cultural engagement. EverWonder Studio’s Ian Orefice emphasized significant events surrounding the games, ensuring a lasting impact beyond basketball.

Anthony, instrumental in planning, prioritized venue and resources, importing necessary basketball facilities. Moreover, players expected substantial benefits, with major NIL (name, image, likeness) elements incorporated.

“We really wanted this to be more than a collection of two great basketball programs playing two games overseas,” Orefice explained.

Reflecting on past experiences, Ivey meticulously planned logistics for her team’s smooth adaptation. Prominent player Hidalgo appreciated the overseas opportunities, highlighting her personal growth through such experiences.

Amidst a packed sports calendar, Bazant anticipated significant audience engagement during televised broadcasts, potentially capturing widespread interest.

The event showcases international cooperation and cultural exchange, paving the way for annual occurrences. With the backdrop of Rome, the unique environments amplify the occasion. The adventure promises unforgettable memories, entwining athleticism and spirituality.
